D.I.Y. Project

Filed under: General Discussion — megan @ 11:39 am

Since I have been here in Freiburg, Germany, I have seen so many of these amazing fabric stores in town.  They have some incredible fabrics with very high price tags, especially for us Americans with the dollar being so down but every time I pass by I am tempted to buy some fabric and I decided that I am going to splurge and do a little D.I.Y. (do it yourself) project.  Amy and I have been wanting to do it for a while now, but haven’t found the right material to do so. I haven’t decided what I want to make yet, but it has to be something incredibly simple that I can hand sew.  A couple things that I am thinking…a scarf, a flower pin, a sash, a easy-to-sew fabric handbag/satchel.  I would love for people with sewing experience to chime in and help me out!  And I will of course share how to make it and display the before and after with everyone! xoxo Megan

7 Ways to Wear a Scarf/Pashmina

Filed under: General Discussion — megan @ 11:05 am

March marks the start of that “funny weather season” where we have very cold days and nice mild spring days.  It is one of those transitional months and I think that it is a great month to use your vibrant scarves or pashminas to brighten up your drab colored outfits.  We want to break your habit of wearing your scarf the same way and show you the various ways that you can use or wear your scarf or pashmina. In the pictures below, I am wearing just a basic white long-sleeved tee and jeans.  Check out how this simple pink pashmina can play up my outfit in so many different ways!

Way 1: The Hang Around.

Way 2:  The Wrap Around.

I’m pretty sure most know how to do this one, but just in case..let the scarf hang down normally as in Way 1 with one side hanging longer than the other.  Take the longer end and wrap around neck.  Voila!

Way 3:  The Loop through.

Create a loop with the scarf and place behind head as shown in picture 1 below.  Take loose ends and pull them through the loop in front of neck.  You’ve got your loop through :)   This is a great way to shorten really long scarves.

Way 4: The Shaw

Chilly? Wear your pashmina or scarf as a shaw by wrapping it around your body and under your arms. A classic and sophisticated way to cover your shoulders when your wearing a cocktail dress.  You can also sweep one side over the shoulder and add a brooch.

Way 5: The Bow

Bring some Chanel into your wardrobe and tie your scarf into a bow.  A simple way to look tre tre chic.  Simply wrap scarf around neck as normal and tie loose ends into a bow.

Way 6: The Necklace.

This look is very in right now and you probably didn’t know you can do it with your scarf!  It is so simple.  Simply, wrap your scarf around your neck and tuck loose ends in.  Then take a brooch or pin and pin it to one side of scarf.

Way 7:  The Tube Scarf

Turn your outfit into a completely different one by tying your scarf into a tube scarf.  Take the loose ends of your scarf and tie them into a knot as seen in picture 1 below.  Place knotted end behind neck and you are finished! Add a pin or brooch for some flare as seen in picture 3 below.

Abbey as Mamie Street-Style Icon

Filed under: General Discussion — megan @ 4:06 am

Our new Mamie Street Style Icon is Abbey McCabe.  Abbey is a long time family friend whose style we have always admired.  She always looks so put together! Always!  When Abbey lived in the neighborhood, we would see her entering her house even from the gym looking so flawless and well coordinated.  And when Amy and I spot Abbey in her Shopmamie purchases, she of course has them styled perfectly.  So of course, Amy and I mutually agreed to pick her as our Mamie Street-Style Icon..we had to learn more about how she looks so fabulous.

About Abbey:  Abbey grew up in Wilmington and went south to UVA for college where she met her husband, Casey.  She has now been married  for almost 5 years and has two children, Hudson, who just turned 3, and Barrett who is almost 4 months.  Yes, she just had a baby 4 months ago and looks that great!  Along with being a wife and a mom, she is a nurse in a Pediatric ICU.  Learn more about Abbey in our style Q & A below.

Q: Can you describe your personal style?  Do you have a style inspiration? For example, is there someone or something that inspires your personal fashion choices?

A: I would define my personal style as classic with a twist.  I tend to choose more traditional pieces and try to add something to make it my own look, whether it be a scarf, a key piece of jewelry or fun shoes.  I like an updated look but not the uber trendy styles that will fade quickly.  My style inspirations are Rachel Bilson and Reese Witherspoon.  I love that Rachel never looks like she’s trying too hard and I like that her style is laidback and comfy but also very feminine and flirty.  Reese has a great “mommy” wardrobe–styles that are practical for getting down and dirty with her kids but still updated and fresh.

Q: What is one of the best purchases you’ve ever made and why?  Have your favorite pieces changed from pre-mom to mom?

A: One of my favorite purchases was a apricot colored Burberry cropped jacket with oversized gold buttons–again, a traditional coat but the orange hue makes it stand out and different from the rest.  One thing that I’m stuck on now is silk blouses, very feminine and sophisticated.  Not the most practical piece for a mom of 2–a little dirt from my son’s trucks and spit up from my baby girl really adds to the look.  I would say my style choices are similar pre-mom to now mom-of-two–I’m still drawn to simple dresses that can be dressed up or down and coats and blazers never get old to me.  My shoe choices have probably changed the most…heels are a rarity these days.  It’s too tough to juggle the kids in heels for now, so I mostly wear tall boots or flats.  Definitely looking forward to bringing heels back into the picture one day:)

Q: How do you dress to fit your body?

A: After having 2 kids, my body has changed a bit…I look for long shirts to pair with skinny jeans or leggings and favor little tanks with high-wasted skirts.  I don’t like anything too snug all over—if I’m wearing snug pants, I like a soft, flowy top.

Style Me Mamie for a Day in the City

Filed under: General Discussion — megan @ 11:03 am

I know by “the city” most of you are thinking in New York City, however, we are talking about a day in city of Wilmington, Delaware.  A city of which most people don’t know much about except that maybe that Joe Biden is from here and that is where their credit cards originate.  Well, to let you know a little bit about Shopmamie.com’s hometown…Wilmington is currently expanding day by day and areas such as Rodney Square, Market Street, and the Wilmington Riverfront are currently being revitalized and new businesses seem to be popping up daily.  Shopmamie Headquarters is located in the charming Trolley Square area of Wilmington (just a 2 minute trip into downtown).  With snow on the ground, Amy popped out of the office and headed downtown with our intern Donna for a coffee and a photo shoot.  She did a great job styling the Fields of Navy & Tan Dress for a winter chic look.

Style Me Mamie for No Coat Required Weather!

Filed under: General Discussion — megan @ 10:25 am

It is such a beautiful day here in Freiburg, Germany.  While I’m anxiously awaiting my package of Shopmamie Spring clothes that Ame sent over for me, I decided to do another Style Me Mamie with the Ruffle Cardigan since it is our item of the week this week.  I wanted to show how you can style it up to look more “springy”.  The sweater is nice and warm and I feel completely comfortable in it with no coat on today in the 50 degree weather.  I also wanted to show how versatile our amazing shoe clips are…I wear my black bow clips all the time and pair them with every pair of black pumps, boots, booties, and flats that I own.  You can spice up any outfit with simple style items like the shoe clips or the flower belt clip that I am wearing.  Guten Tag! Auf Wiedersehen!

Style Me Mamie for Wedding Dress Shopping with your Girl Friends

Filed under: General Discussion — megan @ 8:05 am

Amy set out to help her sweet friend Steph find a beautiful wedding dress for her upcoming special day.  Joined by a couple other friends (all old sorority sisters), they set out to Priscilla of Boston in Ardmore, PA.  I remember Priscilla of Boston as the place where my sister found her bridesmaids’ dresses and the place where I entered a comatose status when I saw the Melissa Sweet bridal gowns they carried.  She is not Vera Wang or Marchesa but I think her designs are just as beautiful and not at all as pricey~ she has to be one of my favorite bridal designers.  I am not sure if Steph found the one, but I think she is getting closer.  Amy was preparing for Steph’s summer wedding by wearing our Shopmamie Flower Show Dress and interpreting it for winter with the new Shopmamie.com Cozi Cardi, leggings, and boots. I love it!  All in all, they had a great Ash Wednesday evening (as you can see by Ame’s forehead..what a good little Catholic girl).

How Fashion Bloggers wear their Shopmamie LBDs (little black dresses) in Winter

Filed under: General Discussion — megan @ 7:30 am

Amy and I sent these 3 amazing fashion blogger ladies Shopmamie.com little black dresses and I thought it was so cool to see how these creative, fashion-minded, and free-spirited bloggers styled these LBDs.  Although they may be a bit more daring than most, it is great to look at these for inspiration and it proves that you can wear a dress in any type of weather.  Happy Friday everyone!  Enjoy!

Love how Christina from SecondSkinStyle styled our Shopmamie Venetian Dress!

Katy from Kansas Couture in our SM Tweed Tunic
